Before you get started
Increases
Step 1
An increase consists of 2 half double crochets in the same stitch: Yarn over.
Step 2
Insert the hook into the stitch (remember BLO), yarn over and pull through, so you have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Step 3
Now you have made your first half double crochet. You repeat this, doing exactly the same thing in the same stitch.
Step 4
This is what it looks like, when you have made 2 half double crochets in the same stitch (BLO).
TIP: When the pattern says “4 inc” it means that over the next 4 stitches you need to make 4 increases:
2 hdc in each stitch 4 times – you go from 4 stitches to 8.
Decreases
Step 1
Now you need to join 2 stitches into 1 stitch:
Yarn over.
Step 2
Insert the hook into the stitch (remember BLO). Yarn over and pull through, so you have 3 loops on your hook.
Step 3
Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through, so you have 4 loops on your hook.
Step 4
Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on the hook. You have now made a decrease and joined 2 stitches into 1.
TIP: When the pattern says “4 dec”, it means that over the next 8 stitches you need to make 4 decreases:
Join the stitches together 2 by 2, so that you go from 8 to 4 stitches.

The video here belongs to the Favorite Christmas Ornament 2025, but it is exactly the same technique. The only changes are the number of rows (here 14 rows), yarn (here Drops Safran/cotton yarn) and hook size (2 mm). Therefore the video is a great help.
The video is in Danish, but it has subtitles in English, so remember to turn those on.
The pattern for the Favorite Easter Egg 2025
Chain: ch
Turning chain: tch
Half Double Crochet : HDC
Back Loop Only: BLO
Increase: INC
Decrease: Dec
START (Remember: Hook size 2 mm) Longer starting end (approx. 30-40 cm – used for sewing when you have finished crocheting) and then 24 ch + 1 tch, turn
(turning stitches should not be crocheted again, so skip it and start in the 2nd stitch from the hook). (24)
ROW 1 2 hdc, 4 inc, 2 hdc, 4 dec, 2 hdc, 4 inc, 2 hdc, 1 tch, turn. (28)
From here, crochet all stitches in the back loop only.
ROW 2-14 2 dec, 4 inc, 2 hdc, 4 dec, 2 hdc, 4 inc, 2 dec, 1 tch, turn. (28)
Repeat row 2 until you have 14 rows in total.
The piece will be approx. 7,5 cm wide and 10,5 cm high with my crochet tension.
… and the last step: assembling
Step 1
Now you need to crochet it into a tube with slip stitches. You need to turn the piece as shown here with your working loop on the right.
Step 2
Since there are 24 stitches in the chain and 28 in the final working row, you need to start and end with 2 decreases in your working row, so that the piece will match as shown by arrows.
Step 3
It should be crocheted very loosely together so that it cannot be seen, when you put the filling in.
You start in your working row, insert the crochet hook into the back loop of the first and second stitch …
Step 4
… and then in a stitch in the chain. Repeat once, and from here you crochet stitches 1 and 1 together. Finally, you make 2 decreases again in your working row.
Crochet the entire row so that you get a tube.
Step 5
Now sew around the end with some good big stitches, so the end can be gathered. Pull it together to close the hole and fasten off.
Step 6
Turn it inside out, so the right side is out and the side with the joint is inside.
If the hole is not completely closed, pull the thread around to the front, sew around the edge again and fasten off.
Step 7
Now the other end needs to be sewn together:
Cut a piece of yarn and sew with large stitches around the edge.
Step 8
Fill it up a little loosely so that there are no big holes in the crochet, but enough so that it is nicely round. Pull the thread together at the end, tie a knot, and sew again to gather it neatly. Finally, add a loop so that it can be hung up nicely.
